Theme Nights: Keeping Dinner Interesting

Taco Tuesday!   Everyone’s heard of that.  It’s a cute name used by people who can’t come up with anything else to eat on a Tuesday night, right? WRONG!  What if I told you that it’s actually part of a very clever process called Theme Nights that helps keep your meal planning interesting?

More and more families are turning to meal planning to help them get organised with their food for the entire week. By meal planning in advance, you guarantee to have the right ingredients in, ahead of time, and to never have to stare into the fridge wondering ‘what shall we have for dinner tonight?’ And the greatest way to ensure your food is never dull is…Theme Nights!


The Simplest Way to Get Started

One of the easiest, and most popular ways to meal plan is by Theme Nights; it’s the original meal-planning method.  You simply pick a number of themes you enjoy eating and then rotate your meals within your themes.  Here’s how:

1.      Write down a list of all the types/cuisines of food that your family enjoys,  for example: pasta, casseroles, fish, barbeque. They can be as specific or as broad as you like. These are your themes.

2.     Assign one theme to each night of the week (hence, ‘Theme Nights’!).  Monday could be stir-fry night, Tuesday could be Tacos (see above!), Wednesday could be Meatless and so on.

3.     When you choose your meals for the week, look at your themes and pick something that fits it for each night. When next week comes around, stick with the themes and pick new matching meals, or change them completely to keep things fresh.  It’s up to you.

That’s it! The great thing about meal planning by Theme Nights is that you know your family is going to love whatever you cook each night, because you only chose themes you know they enjoy, AND you can go out in advance and buy all the right things to make it.  Serious chef points.

But doesn’t it get boring?

No! That’s like asking ‘how long is a piece of string?’  Planning by Theme Nights can be as interesting as YOU choose to make it:

If you want it to be easy as pie then just pick a couple of themes and repeat  It’s ok if you have Mexican Monday AND Thursday – I won’t tell 😉

But if you like to eat a lot of different meals then pick seven different themes.  And change the matching meals next week, too!
